Best Looks from NYFW Spring '23

Best Looks from NYFW Spring '23

'Tis the most wonderful time of the year butterfly babes!  That's right.  New York Fashion Week is in town and we saved you a front row seat.  Hot tip--Spring '23 is gonna be a banger.  Whether pastel hot pants are your vêtements du jour, or an elegant limoncello suit is de rigueur for spring, there's something for literally everyone this szn--and we're covering it all!  So sit back, relax and soak up some serious inspo with Mimi Nation's top 9 picks for spring.

First up...

Proenza Schouler

Nothings screams spring like a flowy, cheery, painfully elegant limoncello suit.  Wide leg.  Silver filigree buttons.  Tailored to perfection.  It's like a refreshing raspberry sherbet on a warm spring day.  With sprinkles.  And extra lemon sauce.  C'est parfait!

In its second season, not only did AnOnlyChild prove it is immune to the sophomore curse, the label positively hit it out of the fashion ballpark #sports.  Truly.  If there was a Cy Young award for fashion, this look would have it clinched.  Sheer sheer lace top with fluted (& belted) hot pants... yikes.  Fashion grand slam.  Spring '23 hall of fame.  World Series Queen!

Carolina Herrera

If the Oprah moms weren't screaming already, they certainly are now.  In our Fashion's Favorite Things ep, this lewk is near the very tippy top of the list.  Sleek, sexy--with the perfect touch of whimsy--the perfect LBD has *finally* arrived.  And it wants to make you the literal belle of the ball.  Je suis mort.  If you need a statement pièce de résistance for your next spring fling, look no further than Wes Gordon's sartorial masterpiece en noire.

Ladies and gentlemen.... Her.  In Coach '23 Spring.  Is it.  I'm telling you.  No one's asking, but if we have anything to say about it, this is what all the girls will be wearing for spring.  Powder blue mini dress, Peter Pan collar, Dorothy energy mary janes... we can't think of anything more perfect.  Or more je ne sais quoi.  Or more like a need than a want.

A maxi w/a cardi for spring.  Groundbreaking.  Mais oui!!  It really is, and we heart emoji it. Perfectly petal pink maxi gown (avec alluring cutout), but put a bejeweled cardi on it, because spring is a fickle amour when it comes to temperature regulation.  Hence our obsession w/this fancy comfy lewk.  Hence our inability to stop thinking about it.  Hence our need for Adeam Spring to arrive quickly, leaving winter in its pretty little dust.

Gabriela Hearst

Word on the street is that the word on the street at Gabriela Hearst Spring is joy.  And we would have to agree.  And also add sensuous, slinky, chic untouchable goddess.  *worship pose*  We are not worthy.  We don't know much, but we do know this: all we wanna do is wear this nonstop next S/S.  To the beach, to the club, dinner on the pier, neighborhood car wash, cool momming at Target.  Never taking it off, never not wearing it, never w/o our 24/7 cool girl uniform for spring.  *top of our game era*

Batsheva has always had our number when it comes to cutest 'n quirkiest, but this collection...  no.  Arrête.  It's too charming!  Sheers and prints and ruffles and bows... le sigh.  And, can we say, Mimi Nation loves a mint moment?  Cause we do.  Add the petal pink midi skirt with matching tresses?  *pounds gavel* the jury is in!  Guilty.  Of being our actual favourite.  *case closed*

Hi Markarian, Carrie Bradshaw called and said she totally approves of this truly extraordinary periwinkle moment.  Like, were they actually channeling Her when they dreamed up this heavenly confection of a dress?  Because wow.  The fit.  The flare.  The buuuustier.  Ugh.  It's too perfect.  C'est magnifique!  No way the Markarian girl isn't getting every single thing she wants from here on out.  Just hand it over, Universe.

Brandon Maxwell

Helllooooo ladies & gentlemen ok I think we're done here.  Turn off the lights, everyone can go home.  We've found the one.  Three three word phrases: pretty white tee, sparkle boyfriend cardi, scalloped sequin skirt.  Also palest lilac blazer.  Also call an ambulance.  (five phrases).  We are positively deceased!  Add this total knockout of a model, and there's just no contest.  Game, set,  (fashion) match.  *dedicating our lives to Brandon's servitude*

And that, my friends, is a wrap on NYFW!  Spring '23... we can not wait.  May you arrive quickly, and last for a fashion lifetime (abt 4 months).  springfashionislife!!!

Another Life Update

Another Life Update

Another year, another Drakeynesian life update.  (And, evidently, another Drakeynesian move;).  After moving from Chapel Hill, NC last summer--& spending an uninterruptedly blissful year in Tampa, FL--our clan is moving once more: from the incomparably beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast, to the majestic mountains and sweet desert air of Salt Lake City, UT.  And we couldn't be happier.  Well, if we could somehow bring the beach, the "winter," and the delightful hospitality of the South with us to Utah, then, we would, undoubtedly, be even happier.

But, until then, we are really, decidedly pretty happy with our current situation.

Luke is settling into his dream job as a professor of ancient things: Greek, Latin, gladiatorial Rome

(a position that will take us on a year-long Middle Eastern study abroad every four years, no less!), the kids are settling into new school and new friends, and I am settling into the formidable fashion landscape of the west.

Card-carrying Valley girls

Which, at times, feels as different from it's east coast analog as their respective time zones denote: just as we are waking up in the west, our eastern counterparts have already answered 10 emails, gone on a hot girl walk, picked out a hot girl outfit, and given up on a hot girl makeup tutorial one quarter of the way in (full acceptance at this point that we will never learn to contour).

Needless to say, it's hard not to feel a little behind the instant my eyelids fly open these days.  But, alas, what we westies lack in a head start, we make up for in spades with a "follow your bliss," ease over hustle, transcendental yogi girl mindset (God bless YouTube Yoga--& First Name Only--Queen, Kassandra).

Needless to say the transition is going well.

All of this is to say, THANK YOU for hanging with us through one of the most chaotic--and fun!--summers of our life.  We're so grateful you're here.  We have so. many. amazing things in store for this Mimi Vie community, not the least of which is a *final* restock of the bangin', total sellout collab with forever queen Bethany Ciotola, very soon.  Like very, very soon.  So stay tuned my friends.

And, if you attempt any makeup tutorials between now & then...

xo Julie

P.S. stay tuned for the eagerly anticipated and *final* Bethany Ciotola restock, coming soon!!

P.P.S. countdown to New York Fashion Week is on... watch for the community favorite this/that rundown on IG stories beginning Sept. 9!

10 Beautiful Thoughts of the Day

10 Beautiful Thoughts of the Day

One of my favorite 2022 resolutions has been to share a beautiful thought each day on Instagram.  I wanted to add a little more beauty to the world.  A little more lightness.  A little more joy.  Sometimes the thoughts are lighthearted & playful, and sometimes they're more heartfelt, but they're always something I find deeply beautiful in its own way.  It's been creatively therapeutic for me, and is, I think, something that has brought joy to others as well.  When I come across something beautiful and uplifting each day, it lightens my whole day and reminds me that beauty is everywhere, just waiting to delight us.  My wish is that it does the same for you.

Here are ten beautiful thoughts I have been loving lately...

Life Update

Hi friends!

I wanted share a little life update from our Mimi Vie family! We've been taking a break from new releases lately because we have some exciting news....

We're moving to Tampa, Florida! We finished up our time in grad school at UNC Chapel Hill--the best and craziest 8 yrs of our life--and Luke was offered a great job in Tampa. We are grateful, and so happy. And will also need at least as many years of therapy to recover lol #phdlife. We are as sad to leave Chapel Hill as we are excited for new adventures in Tampa, and can't wait to be beach bums in eternal summer and never wear shoes again.

All of this is to say that all Mimi Vie operations are being moved to Florida! We have some really exciting things coming up, and can't wait to continue serving you #fancycomfy looks from the sunny shores of the Gulf Coast.  Thank you so much for being here, and for making this amazing community what it is!  With you, this whole thing is way fancier, comfier, and a whole lot more fun ;).

xo Julie

P.s. stay tuned for a major restock, and some pretty new arrivals coming very soon...

P.p.s. here's a little photo dump from a recent "we're moving and are not prepared AT ALL but a goodbye photo shoot thrown together in about 20 min seems necessary" moment ;)

 1. Proof that North Carolina is BEAUTIFUL

2. Proof that our children survived the free range parenting borne of Dad getting a PhD and Mom starting a small business all at the same time

3. Proof that our marriage survived 10 years of grad school (and we even kinda still like each other)

4. And I'm sorry but LOOK AT THOSE TROOPERS

Thanks again for being here, and for making Mimi Vie what it is!  We couldn't do this without you, nor would we ever want to!

Best Looks of NYFW Spring 21

Best Looks of NYFW Spring 21

Bonjour my fellow fashionistas!

I have good news.  Remember how we've all been drowning in the Covid river of fashion-less misery the past few months?  Well Tom Ford (+ an amazing assortment of designers) just threw us a v ruffled life preserver--fashioned in delicate floral prints--and a pair of spring green floaties (puff sleeves save lives!) to match.  Praise be (vie!).

A very virtual NYFW commenced and concluded this week, bringing with it both customary spring hues and an applaudable array of florals, as well as some lingering hints of F/W with splashes of moody styling and brooding tones.  Needless to say, it was an all-around good time that noticeably lifted spirits (and hemlines! Mais oui!).

Hats off to Tom Ford (CFDA board chairman) and the exceptional presenting designers, for filling our souls with hope, and our itemized lines with future sartorial indulgences.  IMHO actual spring 2021 can not come soon enough!

And now, without further ado, here are a few of our favorite lewks:

The pretty colors and extra extra styling characteristic of Rodarte (more is more is more!) always gets us right in the 🦋❤️ (butterflyheart).  Loving these retro-whimsical looks:

yes.  yes we do

Ulla Johnson

The Boho but-make-it-chic Queen of Fashion herself never (like, ever) disappoints.  Ruffles on ruffles on ruffles is *always* the right choice:

Alice + Olivia

A perennial favorite, CEO and creative director Stacey Bendet is a master of color+print.  This lacy, feminine stunner--if "take me, I'm yours" were an outfit--is sure to bring all the boyz to the stay-at-home yard.  *warning: keeping a 6-foot physical distance may be mission impossible

Cinq A Sept

Sending our hearts a flutter with the springiest green and the fluffiest shapes, Cinq A Sept is giving us the hope we need right now.  Visions of crisp spring nights at the hottest spots--covid-19 a far distant memory, like that bad dream wiped away by a lover's kiss a la nuit--filled our minds watching this show.

File this under "what we hope all loungewear looks like in 2021."  Rosetta Getty, you get us.

Fancy nightgown, anyone?

 Badgley Mischka

A favorite fashion maison of A-listers, Mark Badgley and James Mischka are spelled G-L-A-M.  And we are here for it.  This tone on tone stunner has the sleeves of our dreams and a svelte sillhouette to boot.  Keep it saucy, people!  *personal advice we imagine B+M gives to those in le circle #blessed

Tom Ford

This looks clearly speaks for itself, so we're finding ourselves a little speechless at this point.  Except: Nobody does it like Tom Ford.  *also never say no to a matching set. oui oui!

Anna Sui

Sweet Anna Sui is nothing but a breath of fresh air, year after year.  Easily one of our most-looked-forward-to shows at NYFW!  Her bubblegum punk take on quarantine dressing has us all heart+star eyes.  If every day in quarantine looked like this, I'm afraid we'd be out of things to complain about.  And that would really be a shame.

Cult-favorite Khaite is back at it again with their #mood and their #drama and their #fashun.  Had a teensy bit of a difficult time assessing the actual #fashun bc le show was v artsy and you can literally only see about 17% of each garment.  Nevertheless, it was beautiful, and inspiring, and secured the label's iron grip on my heartstrings for yet another season.

Oh, Zimmermann.  Our forever love.  If human-to-fashion-label matrimony were a thing, we'd be first to the courthouse, eponymous gown adorned.  So many reasons to be eternally entwined with this beloved Australian label, not the least of which is that if, heaven forbid, we ever succumb to lovers' quarrels, we gone leave with half. *Zimmermann we would NEVER leave you it was just a joke ilysm

How to Stay Sane During COVID-19 Quarantine

Wow.  Who would have thought 2020 would start off with such a bang?  But not like a loud, happy, fun bang; more like one of those long, low gongggggs that shakes your entire body and reverberates through your bones and seems to go on forever.  Like literally forever. Maybe not forever 😉. But one thing is for certain, COVID-19 is a new beast, my friends.

But we’re going to get through this!  Let’s try to do it as safely, healthily and sanely as possible.  Yeah?

Here are some things that are sure to keep us sane over these next x months:

  1. Get grounded.  Prayer.  Meditation.  Journaling. Experts say (we love a good appeal to the “experts.”  V effective. Experts say.) these things will solve all your problems immediately and completely in perpetuity 4ever.  Lolz. But for real, having a grounding practice has kept me from losing it every five minutes these last few weeks. What it should look like is probably different for everyone.  But for me it’s this: start the morning off with a prayer (extra points for giving thanks!), read some words of scripture (whatever speaks to your soul 🙏), and set your intention for the day (I recommend using my best friend, The Five Minute Journal.  Abt to become your best friend too).  Life-changing. I’m telling you.
  2. Get rly into skincare.  I’m not even gonna try to pretend to be an expert on this one, I’m just gonna say check out these skincare queens and do whatever they say 😉: @kathleenjenningsbeauty, @greatthingsibought and @jamieobanion
  3. Perfect time to perfect the perfect yoga pose.  Bc as some famous yogi said, "You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside."  Mmm. Yeah. What she said. Not good at yoga? Don’t worry, bc as another yogi said: "It's not about being good at something. It's about being good to yourself."  Treat yo self. With a lil yogi treat. Savasana. Night night bb. Furthermore--in case I haven’t convinced you yet--when in lockdown, yoga is a cure for wanderlust: "Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self."  When you can’t journey physically, journey yogically! Heh. Here are a few of my fave YouTube videos (ilYT bc free): 20 min practice, 30 minute practice, and 40 minute practice
  4. The shows must go on.  Ahhh.  My favorite topic.  Here’s a list of all the shows you apparently need to be watching rn according to me and my best insta friends: Friday Night Lights, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Schitt’s Creek, Pushing Daisies, The Good Place, The Great Interior Design Challenge, Next in Fashion, The Man in the High Castle, Making the Cut, Salt Fat Acid Heat, All American, Love is Blind.  Any other recommendations you’d like to add? Leave a comment below and we’ll add it in! Thanks boo :)
  5. No more excuses not to read all those books you always said you were gonna read (talking mostly to myself here 😜).  I used to be a reader. I’d like to still be a reader.  But I also apparently have a bottomless pit of excuses as to why I don’t have time (v original ;).  What better excuse than a stay-at-home order to throw all those other excuses out with the handwashing water and become a reader?  For good book ideas, I always go to my girl Janssen of Everyday Reading.  She’s got lists as bottomless as my excuses, and her taste never lets me down.  Start with 10 Great Books: My Most Recommended Titles.  Or maybe 17 Lighthearted and Funny Books for Grownups, if you’d like to stop crying for a minute or two and have a little laugh.  Might be nice (*says in between sobs*).
  6. Go for a walk.  Sunshine.  Fresh air. Trees.  #Nature never disappoints!
  7. Virtual GNI with your besties courtesy of Zoom, Facetime, or Google Hangout.  Burnin it down online is almost as fun as burning it down mano y mano.  But girls.
  8. Get fancy.  Nowhere to go?  Who cares! Try that new makeup tutorial, beachy-wave your hair, and dress up while you’re dressing down.  I recommend a pretty nightgown and robe.  Nothing like a fancy nightgown to put a lil pep in your quarantine step.
  9. Take a class.  Experts (aka me times the power of Google) say Coursera, Masterclass, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, Google Digital Garage, edX, Khan Academy, Skillshare, FutureLearn, Lynda are all good bets ;).  Happy learning smarty!
  10. Make some fun plans for the future.  Actual experts (😂) say, planning a trip is even more fun than actually taking it.  For rillz. A 2010 study found that vacationers experience a significant boost of happiness in the planning and anticipation stage of a trip, even more so than when they are on the trip!  Wut? Makes sense though when you think about it. Imagination is powerful.  Also imagination costs no $$, so the planning stage can be as extravagant as your diva self demands.  Penthouse suite plz!  Vacays not your thing? That’s ok. Make plans for anything you’d like to do in the future.  Learn a language. Take up a new skill. Land your dream job. Map it all out and plan how you’re going to execute, down to the tiniest detail. I promise you’ll feel happier, and more empowered, than ever before. Plus you’ll have a plan to follow when someday comes ;).

There you have it friends!  Your official COVID-19 quarantine survival guide, courtesy of your local fancy, comfy, 24/7 jammie expert.  Stay healthy, stay well, and always, stay comfy babes ✌️.
